As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dan Middleton was sadly made redundant from his job as a pilot with Emirates airlines.

But, where many of us attempted to learn a new language or took up running or baking, Dan put his time to good use, as he went on to set up his own business, Shedzy, which sells sheds and outdoor offices through his eCommerce website.

This case study tells the story of how Shedzy has grown to become a leading online retailer in their industry, with the help of top-class strategy and expert Google Ads management from Add People’s eCommerce team

The challenge

First and foremost, our bread and butter, get Dan’s Google Ads approach right.

He was making the bold move to start his own eCommerce business in the middle of a pandemic, having lost his job, and we were going to be there to support him.

The team needed to implement and optimise his ads, combining Search and Shopping ad campaigns, in order to grow his sales.

And quickly.

However, this wasn’t the only issue at play…

Because some of his products have a very high average order value (AOV), we found that many of Dan’s customers like to order over the phone so they could ask any questions they had about the product, before going ahead with the purchase.

In January 2022, Dan was offered his old job back with Emirates Airlines which meant a move to Dubai.

Calls to Dubai are extremely expensive! And Dan can’t exactly take customer enquiries whilst he’s at the wheel of an A380, can he?

So, the team needed to find a solution.

And the digital marketing experts went to work on a strategy to overcome these hurdles and grow Dan’s business.

Our strategy

Utilising our partnership with Ruler Analytics, these customer calls could be properly tracked and traced.

The team created a voicemail recording that informed customers of ways to get in touch – maintaining the communication between the business and customer at that crucial point of sale.

Dan’s account manager also recommended setting up a Virtual Receptionist, which would give Dan the peace of mind that customers were getting a more professional service and that he would be able to get back to them at a more convenient time.

This, along with ongoing optimisation of their Google Ads campaigns, including careful budget management, laser-specific targeting of products and location, has seen Shedzy achieve some incredible results!

The results

Since teaming up with Add People, Shedzy has achieved a 490% increase in revenue, with a 2,368% Return On Ad Spend (ROAS).

In January alone, they generated almost £39,000 in revenue through their Google Ads campaigns, with a ROAS of 5,051%.

To date, online traffic to their site has significantly increased, with online store sessions increasing by 86%, up to 14,000.

This is a testament to the team, which has overcome multiple hurdles, gone above and beyond the original brief to improve Dan’s Google Ads, and gone on to deliver exceptional results for Shedzy, which has enabled them to grow and become a high-flyer in their industry.
